our ENSEMBLES

Beginning strings

Beginning Strings is a limited-size class for students with little or no training on a stringed instrument (violin, viola, cello, bass) or those trained in Suzuki but not yet reading music. Students must be at least 9 years old, though exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis. Parents are strongly encouraged to learn along with beginning students!

Beginning Strings is not equivalent to private violin lessons. It is a group class similar to what you might find in schools.

Before the first class, participating families must meet with Mr. McBane for an instrument evaluation (if you already have an instrument) or an instrument fitting (if you don’t), and a consultation in which class requirements and expectations will be discussed. Each student must have an instrument of acceptable quality, either owned or rented. Bravo does not provide instruments! Renting from a local violin shop is often the best option. Please consult with us before purchasing an instrument, especially online! Many instruments sound like a bargain but are a waste of your money - unplayable, untunable, and frustrating.

Beginning Strings normally meets from 11:30-12:30 on Mondays.

intermediate strings

Intermediate Strings is a string orchestra which plays easy to medium-level string orchestra music of many styles. Intermediate Strings normally meets from 12:45 -- 1:45 on Mondays.

ADVANCED STRINGS

Advanced Strings is a string chamber orchestra which plays moderately difficult student orchestra repertoire. Advanced Strings normally meets from 2:00 -- 3:00 on Mondays.

All groups normally participate in fall & spring concerts, plus possible performances at other venues. Bravo’s regular concerts also provide the opportunity for select students to perform recital or chamber music pieces they have polished.

An informal audition is required to join BRAVO’s ensembles.

Please visit the Join Us page for audition information.

Parents who play a stringed instrument may participate in any group for which they are qualified (space permitting)! Participating parents pay a reduced fee.

Qualified students (or parents) may play in more than one ensemble, or may move to a different ensemble during the year.

For instance:
--If you are making progress, you may move up to a more advanced group.
--If you just want to play more, you can play in more than one group.
--You can play a second instrument in another group (for example, violin in Advanced and cello in Intermediate).
--There is no extra tuition or fee to play in more than one group!
The only requirement is permission from the director.
